TASK: Update an installation of Joomla 2.5.8 to the latest version: 2.5.10. Also update Virtuemart from 2.0.18 to version 2.0.24.
This was a very straightforward update. I logged into my admin panel, and looked at the Virtuemart control panel first. There, I clicked on the 'Update!' notice and read the instructions that told me not to use the Live Updater tool for this particular upgrade. The Live Updater is the VM tool where I can just click a button and the update is done! But not this time....Bummer....
So I downloaded the installation file for the latest VM version 2.0.24 and then I used the Joomla Extension Manager to upload and install it. The installation was successful (Thank God!) and I went back to Virtuemart control panel to see that everything looked good and updated. No problems.
Now for Joomla. Checking the Joomla Update tool doesn't help much here, because it tells me that I already have the latest version of Joomla. But that's not true. As of this article, the latest version (of 2.5) is 2.5.14. So something is screwy with my Joomla Update tool....
So I'll use another update method (called Method B in the update instructions (found here). I go to the joomla.org website, and locate the patch file for Joomla 2.5.14. Since I'm updating within the same release series, I will use the patch file, instead of the update file. If I were updating from 1.7 to 2.5 then I would use the update file.
I've found the file I need. It's called Joomla_2.5.x_to_2.5.14-Stable-Patch_Package.zip. I save the file, and upload it to the Joomla Extension Manager Installation screen.
The installation was completely successful! Praise God!
Happy Installation! If you need some help, email me!
