The 'WWW' Debate: Canonicalization in 2026

Whether you prefer www.yourname.com or the streamlined yourname.com, the choice actually impacts your SEO. Search engines technically see these as two different websites. If you don't "force" traffic to one version, you risk splitting your search ranking significance in half—a problem known as a canonicalization error.

Modern Redirects: HTTPS & Subdomains

While modern platforms like Wix and Squarespace handle these redirects with a simple dashboard toggle, custom PHP and Joomla! sites often benefit from a manual .htaccess rule. This ensures that every visitor—and every search engine crawler—is funneled to a single, secure version of your site (HTTPS).

The Technical Fix (.htaccess)

For those running on Apache servers, the mod_rewrite rule remains the gold standard for forcing a specific domain format. By adding a few lines of code to your root directory, you can ensure that anyone typing "www" is instantly moved to the "non-www" version, or vice versa, keeping your site's authority concentrated in one place.

Joomla Implementation

If you are using a CMS like Joomla!, we integrate these rules directly into your existing security layers. This prevents common exploits while simultaneously managing your brand's URL structure, ensuring a fast, professional, and SEO-friendly user experience.

What is FTP Information?

Understanding Site Access: From FTP to Managed Portals

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Traditionally, this was the primary "key" used to unlock your web server—the specialized computer where your website’s files live. In the earlier days of the web, if we wanted to change a single line of code or upload a new image, we had to use an FTP client to "tunnel" into your server and swap out the files manually.

The 2026 Shift: Why FTP is becoming a "Backdoor"

For many of our modern projects, the traditional 3-item login (Host Name, Username, and Password) is no longer the first thing we ask for. With the rise of all-in-one builders like Wix and Squarespace, there are no files to "upload" in the traditional sense. We manage everything through your account dashboard, meaning we often only need "Contributor" or "Admin" access to get the job done.

Furthermore, modern CMS dashboards like Joomla! and Wordpress now allow us to handle the vast majority of updates, installations, and styling directly through the web interface. This bypasses the need for manual file transfers for most routine maintenance and design tasks.

When do we still need it?

Despite these advancements, FTP (specifically the secure version, SFTP) remains an essential tool for deep technical work. We may still ask for your server credentials if a site update requires "behind-the-scenes" troubleshooting or if we are developing specialized PHP components and custom database scripts that require direct server interaction.

Finding Your Info

If your project requires this level of access, your FTP or SFTP information is provided by your web host, typically found in your hosting control panel under "FTP Accounts." However, many modern hosts now allow you to simply "Invite a Developer" via email, giving us secure access without you ever having to hunt down a password.

What You Need to Know About Web Hosting

Web hosting is the service of storing your website files and serving them to the public via the internet. Your website essentially "lives" on the web host's servers. There are several types of web hosting available today, including Shared, VPS (Virtual Private Server), Dedicated, and Cloud hosting—the most common configurations for businesses. Most of our clients do well with Shared Hosting on a Linux operating system.*

Before your website can go live, you'll need to purchase a hosting plan along with a domain name, such as www.YourSiteName.com. Once set up, the host will email you account login details, including FTP/SFTP access and control panel info. Forward that to us, and we'll handle the rest!

Some reliable hosting companies include SiteGround.com, which we use for our own site and have been thrilled with. SiteGround excels with content management systems like Joomla or WordPress, making installations, updates, and AI-enhanced optimizations straightforward. Their pricing is competitive, with excellent uptime and built-in features like free SSL and CDN integration.

Here are a few other solid options:

Hostinger - Affordable and user-friendly with strong performance.

IONOS - Great value for beginners with reliable tools.

DreamHost - Solid alternative with good support and features.

If you're selling products online, SSL certificates are now standard and often included for free (via Let's Encrypt or similar). This allows us to enable secure, encrypted transactions on your site right away.

More About Hosting

Shared hosting is the most budget-friendly option and works well for most clients. Your site shares a server with others, but resources are partitioned for security and performance. Modern plans often include SSD storage, unlimited bandwidth in entry-level tiers, and tools like one-click installs for CMS platforms. Expect 50GB+ of space or even unlimited in many cases—plenty for typical sites. If your site grows massive, you might need more scalable options like VPS or Dedicated.

All-in-one platforms like Squarespace and Wix are ideal for beginners or small businesses wanting a hassle-free setup. They combine hosting, domain registration, drag-and-drop builders, templates, and even e-commerce tools into one subscription. No need to manage servers—everything's handled, with automatic updates, security, and mobile optimization. Pricing starts around $15-25/month, making them accessible, though they offer less customization than traditional hosting for advanced users.

Dedicated hosting provides a full physical server just for you, giving complete control over setup and configurations. It's pricier and best for high-traffic sites, but we can assist with setup if needed.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) offers a middle ground, with more control and resources than shared, at a moderate cost. Cloud hosting, using distributed networks like AWS integrations, provides flexible scaling and pay-as-you-go pricing for variable needs.

For advanced plans like VPS or Dedicated, options often include managed services for easier maintenance, but we recommend starting simple unless your site demands it.

* We specialize in PHP and MySQL, which perform best on Linux environments. Windows hosting is mainly for ASP.NET apps.

To advertise your website, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaigns can be set up with leading platforms like Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising (which includes former Yahoo and Bing networks).

First, you'll create an account and fund it via debit, credit card, or digital payment methods like Apple Pay or Google Wallet.

Then, we'll craft targeted ads that align with your website's products and services, incorporating formats like text, display, video, or shopping ads.

We'll also develop a strategic keyword list—enhanced by AI tools for semantic matching and audience intent—to trigger when your ads appear.

When someone searches for relevant terms, your ad could show up at the top of results, in maps, or across partner sites. If a user clicks through to your site, you'll only pay for that engagement.

Candyweb has extensive experience managing PPC campaigns, leveraging AI-driven bidding for optimal performance.

Google Ads remains the top choice for broad reach and results, but plan for at least $200 per month to see meaningful impact in 2026's competitive landscape.

For smaller budgets, we recommend Microsoft Advertising— it reaches fewer searchers overall but often delivers stronger ROI on modest spends ($100-$200/month) through precise targeting and lower competition.

Top Ways to Get Featured in AI Search Summaries

There are several proven strategies to increase your chances of being included in AI-generated search summaries, such as Google's AI Overviews. These summaries pull from top-ranking content to provide quick, helpful answers right at the top of results. The key is focusing on what AI algorithms value most: relevance, clarity, and trustworthiness. Here are the top 5 ways to optimize your site for better inclusion.

1. Create High-Quality, Authoritative Content

Content is still king, especially for AI summaries that prioritize E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). Produce original, in-depth material that's genuinely helpful to users—think expert insights, fact-based guides, and unique perspectives rather than generic info. AI engines like Google's favor content created for people, not just search rankings, as it better satisfies queries. For example, if you're in health tech, share detailed articles on emerging trends with your professional take. The more valuable and non-commodity your content, the more likely AI will cite it in summaries.

2. Structure Your Content for Easy AI Parsing

Make your pages skimmable and structured so AI can quickly extract key info. Use clear heading hierarchies (like H2 for main questions and H3 for subpoints), bullet lists, numbered steps, and concise summaries. Start articles with a direct answer in the first few paragraphs, and format with semantic HTML for better readability. This "atomic answer" approach—short, punchy paragraphs addressing specific queries—helps AI pull snippets seamlessly into overviews.

3. Implement Structured Data and Schema Markup

Add schema markup to your pages to help AI understand and categorize your content. Use types like Article, FAQ, Blog and DIY to label elements clearly. This makes it easier for search engines to parse and feature your info in summaries. Tools like Google's Structured Data Markup Helper can guide you. In 2026, with AI handling more complex queries, this technical boost signals relevance and improves your shot at being highlighted.

4. Target User Questions and Intent

Optimize around how people actually search, including voice queries and conversational phrases. Use question-based headers (e.g., "What is the best way to...?") and provide direct, concise answers that match user intent. Research queries via tools like AI-powered keyword planners, then build content clusters around full topics. This aligns your site with AI's goal of delivering instant, accurate responses.

5. Build Authority with Backlinks and Freshness

Earn backlinks from reputable sites to signal trustworthiness. AI summaries often pull from authoritative sources. Regularly update your content to keep it current, as fresh material performs better in dynamic AI results. Cite reliable sources in your pieces and focus on entity-based writing (naming brands, tools, or concepts) to help AI recognize and reference you. These steps turn your site into a go-to resource for AI engines.

These tactics build on solid SEO foundations and adapt to 2026's AI-driven search. For more tailored advice, reach out—we can review your site and suggest optimizations.
